Opened in 1799, The New York Marine Hospital known simply as the Quarantine was located on the northeastern shore of Staten Island, just a few feet south of where the Staten Island Ferry lands today. Quarantine are one of humanity's oldest defense against contagious disease. People in quarantine aren’t happy, and sometimes the people right outside quarantine facilities aren’t happy either. Fear and ignorance about diseases and quarantines can be a combustible mixture leading. On the night of September 1st, 1858, a mob of angry villagers stormed and set fire to the New York Marine Hospital in Staten Island, New York.
